This syrup. Is. Delicious. And so easy. And it can taste like anything you want it to.
We eat a lot of waffles and pancakes at our house. I am not of fan of the syrups from the grocery so we make this instead. It is thick and buttery the way I like it! Yum!
I have flavored it several ways: with cinnamon and vanilla, with rum extract, and my favorite to date – cinnamon cream rum. Oh yeah!
Leftovers, if there are any, go in the fridge (because of the butter). I don’t know how long before ‘expiring’ because ours is not around long enough to go bad.
I want to hear what you flavor yours with and if you’ll ever go back to using ‘store syrup’ after this?! …
Happy ending.
- 1 cup brown sugar or sucanat
- 1 TBSP cornstarch
- 1 cup water
- 3 TBSP butter
- 3 TBSP cinnamon cream rum or flavoring of your choice*
- Whisk sugar and cornstarch in a sauce pan to mix.
- Add water and turn heat on medium high.
- Add butter.
- Add flavoring to your taste.
- Continue to heat and stir moderately until boiling for a minute or two or until desired thickness.
The thing to remember about this recipe is to keep the ratio of sugar and water even. The rest of the recipe can be adjusted to your taste. To make it thinner or thicker, adjust the amount of cornstarch. *You can flavor it with cinnamon, vanilla, your favorite extract, coffee syrup or liqueur. If you are using an extract like vanilla, rum, almond, etc, 1-2 tsp will be plenty. For the coffee syrup or liqueur, depending on your preference, 2-3 TBSP usually works. Have fun with it.
This looks delicious! Thank you so much for posting!
Thanks for popping in! Yes, delicious! Please let me know if you try it!
I can’t wait to try this!! I am not usually great at making these sorts of things but this seems simple enough. Thank you so much for sharing I love buttery syrups
MMMMMMMM – Yes – buttery and easy! You can do it! Let me know how it turns out!
You make and enjoy this regularly? I hate that all the syrups these days are corn syrup. I tried real maple syrup, but it wasn’t very good. I might have to give this a try!
Oh yes, this is the only syrup we eat at home. We don’t buy from the store anymore. I also try to avoid corn syrup. We had pancakes yesterday and I told my husband, as much as I like pancakes and waffles, I just use them to hold the syrup on my fork …. let me know if you like it!
